What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a gentle person-centred trauma therapy technique that uses eye position to access the deepest parts of the brain. This can help you resolve ingrained traumas and emotional blocks while discovering deep insights for growth, healing, and self-acceptance.

How it Works

What does an average Brainspotting session look like? Well, it depends. There are a number of ways to effectively incorporate Brainspotting, and your therapist will tailor your session based on your needs.

We might begin by discussing something that’s troubling you, or that’s having a negative impact on your life. Your therapist will ask you some questions, and invite you to reflect on what you’re saying. As well as helping you to explore the issue, this will also enable your therapist to attune with you, so they can conduct the session in a way that’s safe and within your window of tolerance.

As you think about the issue, your therapist will invite you to pay attention to how your body’s responding. Are any areas feeling particularly tense, or calm? From here we’ll establish where your eyes rest so as to match the feeling in your body. This is the “brainspot”, and understanding your eyes’ position is key to accessing the deepest parts of your brain to help you resolve your stored trauma and emotional blocks.

Throughout your Brainspotting session, your therapist may make use of bio-lateral music, allowing your mind to wander to wherever it wants to go. But they’ll be with you every step of the way, and ready to discuss anything that comes up to help you find your own meanings.

Benefits of Brainspotting

Your eyes are the key to uncovering and overcoming the trauma and blocks that your brain has hidden in its deepest levels. Often, people who experience trauma can push the impact to the back of the mind. They may not consciously think about the trauma, but the body still reacts as if it’s responding to a threat. This can lead to nightmares, shaking, sweats, jumpiness, freezing, and flashbacks, along with incapacitating blocks when you’re trying to carry out everyday tasks.

Brainspotting can help you understand and resolve these deeply ingrained traumas and blocks, which can set you on a path to healing and renewal. This gentle person-centred therapy can also free your thoughts from the constraints you’ve built up over time, so you can reconnect with your true self while you forge inspirational and insightful new neural pathways.

As you’ll see from the testimonials below, many describe Brainspotting as a transformational, or even a transcendent experience. It’s a journey of self-rediscovery with the support of a grounded, compassionate professional.
